If you have kids or elderly passengers, running boards are the most practical truck mod you can buy. Here's why they're worth every penny.

If you drive a pickup truck and have kids, elderly parents, or anyone under 5'8" in your life, running boards aren't a luxury — they're a necessity. Here's why running boards are the single most impactful upgrade you can make for family use.
The average stock pickup truck sits 30-36 inches off the ground. Add a leveling kit or lift, and you're looking at 38-44 inches. For a 5-year-old, an elderly grandparent, or anyone with mobility issues, that's a significant barrier to entry — literally.
Running boards provide a step that's typically 6-8 inches lower than your truck's door sill. This reduces the step-in height from 36 inches to 28 inches — a 22% reduction that makes a world of difference for shorter passengers.
The most common and affordable option. Fixed boards from Westin, Dee Zee, and N-Fab bolt directly to your truck's frame and stay in place permanently. They cost $150-400 and install in 30-60 minutes.
The premium choice. Power running boards deploy automatically when you open the door and retract when closed. They give you a step when you need it and tuck away for a clean look when you don't. At $1,200-1,800, they're expensive but worth it for daily family use.
If you only need a step at the front doors (not the full side), drop steps are a budget-friendly option. They mount at the front fender and provide a single step. $50-150 per pair.
Running boards aren't just for getting in and out. They also:
Most running board kits are designed for DIY installation. They use existing holes in your truck's frame — no drilling required. With basic hand tools and 30-60 minutes, you can install a set yourself. If you're not comfortable with DIY, any mechanic can install them in under an hour.
For most families, we recommend fixed running boards from Westin or Dee Zee. They're affordable, durable, and provide excellent functionality. If you want the premium experience and have the budget, Amp Research power running boards are the gold standard.
If you only buy one truck accessory this year, make it running boards. The daily convenience for your family is worth 10x the cost. Browse our selection of running boards for F-150, Silverado, RAM 1500, and Tundra at IronBedTruck.
