Mud flaps might not be the most exciting truck accessory, but they're one of the most important. A good set of mud flaps protects your truck's paint, prevents rock chips on vehicles behind you, and keeps your undercarriage clean. This guide covers everything you need to know to choose the right mud flaps for your truck.
The most common and affordable option. Quality rubber mud flaps (like WeatherTech) are flexible, won't crack in cold weather, and provide excellent coverage. Look for mud flaps that are at least 3/8-inch thick — thinner flaps flap around at highway speeds.
Rigid plastic mud flaps (like Husky) offer a sleeker appearance but are less flexible. They're ideal for trucks that stay on paved roads. Avoid cheap plastic flaps — they become brittle and crack in cold weather.
The premium choice. Stainless steel mud flaps (like Rock Tamers) are virtually indestructible and look incredible on show trucks. They're expensive ($200-400 per set) but last forever.
Mud flaps should be wide enough to cover your tire width and extend at least 2 inches below the bottom of your tire. Here's a quick sizing guide:
These mount using existing holes in your truck's wheel well. They're the easiest to install and look the most factory. WeatherTech and Husky both offer bolt-on kits for most popular trucks.
These use clamps that attach to your fender flare or wheel well lip. They're ideal if you don't want to drill holes but still want a secure mount.
The most affordable option. You drill holes in your fender and bolt the flaps directly. Universal flaps work on any truck but require more installation effort.
Best Overall: WeatherTech — custom-fit, lifetime warranty, made in USA Best Budget: Husky — excellent value, good fitment Best Premium: Rock Tamers — stainless steel, indestructible Best for Off-Road: RBP — heavy-duty, aggressive styling
The right mud flaps protect your truck and look great doing it. For most owners, WeatherTech custom-fit mud flaps are the best choice — they're built to last, fit perfectly, and come with a lifetime warranty.
